A World Without Hostess Twinkies? Say It Isn’t So [POLL]

What would the world be like without the delicious, spongy cake with cream filling? Yes, life without the iconic Twinkie! Well I hate to say it, but we could see the end of the Twinkie if things don’t get better for the company who makes the perfect snack food.Bankrupt Hostess Brands Inc., makers of Twinkies, has been severely  affected by workers’ striking over health benefits and longer work days. But it’s the Twinkie! The very snack food that Hillary Clinton included in the millennium time capsule when she was the First Lady.

It’s reported the striking workers formed a picket line at the company’s Sacramento, Calif., plant Sunday, two days after the walkout began when the company imposed a contract that would cut wages by 8 percent. The Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union said the contract would also cut benefits by 27 to 32 percent.

Here’s what Hostess CEO Grey Rayburn has to say on the situation:

”We’ve been very straight forward that the business can’t withstand the significant work stoppage,” he said. “If this strike continues, there is certainly a risk that Hostess will go out of business.”

Union President, Frank Hurt had this to say about Hostess:

“Hostess Brands is making a mockery of the labor relations system that has been in place for nearly 100 years,” union President Frank Hurt said in a statement. “Our members are not just striking for themselves, but for all unionized workers across North America who are covered by collective bargaining agreements.”

The union, which represents more than 80,000 industry workers, maintains that the company’s policies will bring its members back to workplace standards of the 1950s.

If the Twinkie goes away, so will a little bit of my childhood.
