Authorities say a three-day-old infant was found safe last night after his mother was shot to death outside a pediatric clinic in suburban Houston in Spring.

Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Lignon says Verna McClain, a registered nurse, is charged in the abduction of the newborn and the shooting death of 28-year-old Kala Marie Golden. Authorities say the infant’s mother was shot several times after a verbal altercation in the clinic's parking lot. McClain then took the baby and sped away. Baby Keegan was found safe some six hours later unharmed.

Ligon told ABC's "Good Morning America" that McClain's statement to investigators indicate the shooting was part of a plan to kidnap a child. He says he doesn't think Golden was specifically targeted.

The baby’s grandmother said her daughter died trying to save the infant.
