One East Texas doctor is very quietly having a huge impact on thousands of people several continents away, and recently performed a milestone 30-thousandth surgery aboard Africa's Mercy Ship.  Those folks can see, thanks to him!

It's hard for most of us to imagine the conditions in some places in Africa, where some families survives on less than $2 per day, or $60 per month.  A paycheck of thirty bucks every two weeks is something we just can't fathom.  And healthcare options aren't great in these places near Togo and Guinea, but Mercy Ships aims to change that.

The group relies on donations from people like you and me, and they coordinate efforts with volunteer doctors to offer treatments to people who need them.  There are 5 billion people without access to safe surgery, and one Tyler doctor is changing that, and becoming part of the solution.

Dr. Glenn is Strauss is helping restore eyesight to people at risk of losing theirs, and he's teaching other doctors revolutionary techniques in cataract surgery that will keep the low cost treatments going for years to come.  Dr. Strauss performed his first surgery aboard the Mercy Ship in 2007, and just performed a milestone 30-thousandth surgery aboard the ship that's now docked in Cameroon.

I love a good story about an East Texas hero, and Dr. Strauss is one of those quiet good Samaritans who is having a huge impact on one little corner of the world.  He's joining other surgeons, dentists, nurses, healthcare trainers, teachers, cooks, and engineers aboard Mercy Ships to change lives, and we couldn't let that go unnoticed.
