Astrodome Headed for Demolition
There has been a great effort to save the "Eighth Wonder of the World," but to no avail.
After a 53 percent vote to overturn the renovation, the once-iconic Houston Astrodome is destined for demolition.
It was the world's first domed stadium, which housed the Houston Astros from 1965-1999 and the Houston Oilers from 1968-1997. It's had little use in the past 14 years.
There are really no events that are featured there with new stadiums in the city and more sophisticated venues, it would cost taxpayers $217 million to convert it into a proposed convention center.
The vote was rejected Tuesday. It will cost between $29 and $71 million to tear it down.
Long live the Astrodome.
