John Mayer has felt the wrath of Taylor Swift‘s guitar and pen, and he didn’t like it. The pop-singer acknowledges that ‘Dear John’ — an album cut from Swift’s 2010 ‘Speak Now’ album — is about him, but adds that he didn’t know that he’d hurt her until the song came out.
Every once in awhile, an artist like Miranda Lambert needs to remind the country music community what crazy looks like. All this talk of marriage, babies and puppy dogs could have left some (unwisely) wondering if Nashville’s most explosive firecracker had settled into life as a domestic diva. ‘Fastest Girl in Town’ is Lambert breathing fire again.
Hank Williams Jr. turned 63 years old Saturday. Throughout his over 40 year career, the son of country music’s greatest singer has created a career his father would be proud of, with a two decade-long stretch of hits and recognition at award shows. Lately he’s become the voice of blue collar America, while still writing songs his fans relate to — even if they don’t get much radio airplay.
Country music has a long tradition of supporting the troops, with stars like Toby Keith, Kellie Pickler and Darryl Worley taking frequent trips overseas to play for the men and women stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Of course, before the Gulf Wars, country musicians were quick to join the USO to play for troops stationed just about anywhere. While only a minority of Nashville’s best served in the military, more than a few on this list may surprise you.
Pistol Annies singer Angaleena Presley has married. The announcement was made with this photo on the all-girl trio’s Facebook page late Thursday afternoon (May 24). “Holler got hitched, y’all! Congrats Angaleena we love you!” the band wrote on Facebook.
Tim McGraw and Taylor Swift are now labelmates. Just this morning McGraw announced that he signed a recording contract with Big Machine Records. In a press release, the country music legend explained how the deal — signed on May 9 — is the start of his next chapter.
With a wall of mechanical fans blowing hair all across her face, Carrie Underwood performed the title track from her new ‘Blown Away’ album at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night. The country singer’s performance lacked the luminaries, exotic dancers and costumes many of the previous artists employed, but it lacked nothing in talent. She was as vocally strong as she’s ever been during a televised performance.
Willie Nelson‘s new album ‘Heroes’ is an eclectic collection of ambient emo-country, Texas swing and jazzy ballads. The singer isn’t confined by the country genre on any of the 14 songs. No one will ever doubt his credentials, so even songs like ‘The Scientist’ feel like one Hank Sr. may have chosen decades ago. OK, perhaps that’s an exaggeration, but few other singers could give the political lyric the proper twang.
Very few who’ve seen the controversial cover of this week’s issue of Time Magazine walk away without an opinion, and country star Sara Evans is no different. She is one of two female vocalists outraged by the photo, which shows a three-year-old boy standing on a chair and breastfeeding from his mother.
Much like he did with ‘Take a Back Road’ in 2011, Rodney Atkins has released a song you’ll struggle to keep from singing along with by summer’s end. ‘Just Wanna Rock N’ Roll’ is carefree fun that showcases the singer as a cool breeze on a dog’s-breath-hot summer day.
There are dozens (if not hundreds) of country songs about moms, and many country singers are even mothers themselves. For this reason, the Mother’s Day holiday is sure to be one that is surely not going to be overlooked on any humble artist’s calendar. Take a look at the women who helped shape the ladies and gents of country music — the ones that give us so much wonderful music year after year — in this list of Country Stars and Their Moms.
