All through East Texas and other parts of the globe - and many of you, including myself - have seen young men with their pants hanging below their waist line. We call that term ‘sagging.”  However, the sight is rather unpleasant and South Carolina lawmakers are putting a bill together to possibly put an end to this trend. The question is, will this bill catch on?

ABC 7 Chicago reports South Carolina law makers have put together a bill that would make it unlawful for pants to hang more than three inches below the “crest of his ileum” or (top of the hips), which would show their underwear. Representative Wendell Gilliard (D-Charleston) co-sponsored the House Bill 4957 which was introduced on February 15.

Gillard said in a statement:

The pants now are being worn below the knees.  If a female was to go around in the same fashion, pants down by their ankles or below the waist, we would see that as indecent exposure.

ABC News 4 reports for the first offense there is a fine up to $25, and $50 for the second, and $75 for the third.  Also, three to six hours of community service would be added per offense.

In my younger days when I didn’t know any better, I used to wear my pants sagging until my grandfather caught me and told me to put a belt on. I also received a very stern talking to about self-dignity and respect for myself as a person.

So, as an elder reaching back to the younger generation who just so happens to wear their pants sagging, I say to you have some self-respect for yourself and pull your pants up.  Your older self will thank you for it.
