Body Found in Burned Out Car in Smith County
Smith County Sheriff Investigators are awaiting autopsy results to determine the identification of a body discovered in a burned out vehicle in Northeast Smith County.
Authorities were notified after fire officials responded to a car on fire on County Rd. 3101 also known as Barber Rd. near the Jackson Heights area.
The body was discovered in the passenger side of the vehicle and investigators said the body is unidentifiable and could not determine if the person was a male or female.
The Sheriff’s Office requested the assistance of the State Fire Marshal’s Office and their accelerant-detecting K-9. Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith dispatched a forensic team, detectives and other Sheriff’s Office personnel to secure the location and conduct a thorough investigation.
DNA and other information collected from the remains and the scene will be used to help make an identification of the individual.
The inquest was held by Justice of the Peace 4 Mitch Shamburger, who ordered the body be taken to The Southwestern Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas for an autopsy.
