Brad Paisley stepped out on a limb by adding pop artist Demi Lovato to his new single “Without a Fight,” but it seems it’s already paid off.

Paisley earned his largest-ever number of radio adds following its debut May 13, with 120 country stations putting the tune in rotation. His lead-off single from his forthcoming new album, the song also debuted at No. 27 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart.

The duet is a powerful and sexy ballad about a passionate love between two people who can’t seem to get along, but still have a strong physical connection. Lovato brings a unique sound to the country song with her powerhouse pop vocals in harmony with Paisley’s trademark twang, creating a catchy but poignant track to kick off Paisley’s new record.

Written by Paisley, Kelley Lovelace and Lee Thomas Miller, the song is just one of several on the artist’s upcoming record that are representative of the genre-blurring going on in the music landscape today, country included. Many artists are branching out of their niche and experimenting with other musical styles and influences, including artists from other genres in their music and blending two different sounds to create a new one. Keith Urban recently released his new record, Ripcord, which includes a collaboration with rapper Pitbull and an EDM-inspired track with Carrie Underwood. Sam Hunt, of course, is infamous for his infusing of hip-hop and pop into his country songs, and Lady Antebellum recently collaborated with EDM artist Audien for tune called “Something Better."

As for Paisley, he’s said that in addition to Lovato, his record will include appearances from legendary rockers Mick Jagger and John Fogerty, as well as hip-hop producer and artist Timbaland.

“I wanted the collaborations on this record to be collaborations that took me outside of what you’d typically think and brought that other world into this, but it’s also very country,” Paisley says.

The singer/songwriter is getting ready to head out on his Life Amplified Tour, which lands him at Country Jam in Colorado in June.
