Two new films — ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ and ‘The Change-Up’ — premiered in the top five in this weekend’s best box-office earners, coming in at number one and number four, respectively.
Last weekend’s top films, ‘The Smurfs’ and ‘Cowboys & Aliens,’ moved to the second and third-place slots.

The DVD was released yesterday. Soul Surfer tells the true story of teen surfer Bethany Hamilton, who lost her arm in a shark attack and courageously overcame all odds to become a champion again, through her sheer determination and unwavering faith. The film features an all-star cast, including Anna Sophia Robb and Helen Hunt, with Carrie Underwood in her film debut, and Dennis Quaid.
The Harrison Ford/Daniel Craig sci-fi vehicle ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ tied with ‘The Smurfs’ for first place at the box office, with each taking in $36.2 million in their debut weekend.
The blockbuster ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2′ dropped to fourth, earning a total of $318.4 million in the three weeks since its release, while ‘Friends with Benefits,’ ‘Horrible Bosses,’ and ‘Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon’ dropped out of the top five.
Harrison Ford‘s 40th movie, ‘Cowboys and Aliens,’ was released on Friday. To commemorate the occasion, the National Post’s Steve Murray put together ‘Forty Fords,’ showing Ford in character from each film — beginning with his first flick, 1967′s ‘A Time for Killing,’ all the way through his new sci-fi picture that opens today.
The idea of turning classic board game Battleship into a feature-length movie still doesn’t make much sense, but we’ll admit that we’re a little less skeptical after watching the first official trailer for the movie, released Wednesday by Yahoo!
Though some of the footage underwhelms (why does it always have to be about aliens? and why did they make Taylor Kitsch shave his hair off?!), the film still looks like it will be a visual showcase, with epic effects and battle sequences — not to mention cutesy yellow missiles that look like the iconic peg pieces from the Hasbro game. Strait plays Dusty Chandler, one of the hottest performers in country music. Dusty feels that his elaborate stage show is overwhelming his music, a suspicion confirmed one night when he forgets several bars of a chart-topping hit and his fans don't even notice. Disillusioned, Dusty tells his manager Lula (Lesley Ann Warren) and best buddy Earl (John Doe) that he's taking a break.
