There are many Dairy Queen locations that will close soon because of financial troubles, but there is a bright side.  The locations that survive will be dishing up a brand new Oreo Hot Cocoa Blizzard, along with that beloved Candy Cane Chill Blizzard this winter. You'll just have to know where to go to find 'em.

Irving-based Vasari LLC went to court this week to outline the bankruptcy plan, and it includes closing 29 Dairy Queen locations in Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. According to Amarillo.com, the company says the DQ locations that will shut down are "underperforming," and they'll close by the end of the year.  The rest of the company is being restructured.

The company said many of its restaurants are in prime oil country, and the effects of Hurricane Harvey took a toll on profits as reported by the Star-Telegram.  Some of the locations were damaged by Harvey, and the extended closures and loss of inventory made it hard to bounce back.

What's that mean for East Texas DQ locations?  The Tyler, Van, Canton, and Noonday locations are NOT on the list of closures.  Whew!  Most East Texas locations made the cut and will remain open, but there are a few areas nearby that will be without Blizzards this winter.

These Texas Dairy Queen locations are on the list scheduled to close with the reorganization:

  • Crosbyton, 303 West Main Street
  • Denver City, 500 West Broadway
  • Idalou, 108 West 1st Street
  • Lockney, 217 South Main Street
  • Merkel, 1107 North 7th Street
  • Post, 601 North Broadway
  • Seagraves, 1005 Railroad
  • Clarendon, 603 West 2nd Street
  • Claude, 298 West 1st Street
  • Coleman, 2000 South Commercial Avenue
  • Perryton, 1014 South Main Street
  • Shamrock, 1243 North Main Street
  • Wellington, 1010 Houston Street
  • Dalhart, 215 Oak Avenue
  • Dumas, 224 S. Dumas Avenue
  • Gruver, 200 Main Street
  • Haskell, 211 North 1st Street
  • Stratford, 502 East Texas Avenue
  • Cedar Hill, 303 West Copper Street
  • Carrollton, 3488 East Rosemead Parkway
  • Waco, 125 LaSalle
  • San Augustine, 1010 Nacogdoches Highway
  • Conroe, 1612 North Frazier Street
  • Giddings, 977 East Austin Street

Now the good news.  If your favorite DQ location is not on the closure list, you'll be able to pop in and get the ever-popular Candy Cane Chill Blizzard this winter, along with the new Oreo Hot Cocoa Blizzard that sounds cozy warm and ice cold at the same time.  Both of those just launched this week, and will be available through December.

Dairy Queen is an East Texas fixture, and we're glad most of them here will not go away.  Long live DQ!
