[BREAKING] Dallas Cowboys Release Cornerback Terence Newman

The Dallas Cowboys released cornerback and former first-round draft pick Terence Newman on Tuesday, according to a report on ESPNDallas.com.

The Cowboys drafted Newman in the first round of the 2003 draft. He since has been cast as a disappointment and a player constantly hampered by injuries. He missed the first two games of 2011 with a groin injury he suffered during training camp.

Newman's release clears up some major cap space for the Cowboys, who created $4 to $6 million in salary cap space, according to ESPN Dallas. Newman was scheduled to make just over $8 million this season.

Newman, 33, is seventh in Cowboys history in interceptions and tied for the team lead in 2011 with four picks. He often became a favorite target for opposing quarterbacks, however, especially with deep passes.

The Cowboys also released kicker David Buehler on Tuesday. Dallas drafted Buehler in the fifth round in 2009, but he lost his job to rookie Dan Bailey last season. Buehler was scheduled to make $1.26 million in 2012.
