New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, one of baseball’s best players of the last 20 years and five-time World Series champion, announced today (Feb. 12) he will retire at the end of the 2014 Major League Baseball season.

Jeter made the announcement in a lengthy letter he posted on his Facebook page.

Jeter is yet another Yankees legend who will be leaving the organization, and he’ll be the last component to depart from the dominating teams of the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Yankees closer Mariano Rivera retired at the end of the 2013 season, and we’ll likely see a similar experience for Jeter as the season goes on, as Rivera was honored by every team he played against in his final season.

The 1996 Rookie of the Year is a career .312 hitter and a 14-time All-Star. Jeter only played in 17 games in 2013 due to a number of injuries. It was only the second time in his career he played in fewer than 131 games.
