Dolly Parton License Plates Available in Tennessee

Dolly Parton fans in Tennessee now have another way to show their love for the country icon: their license plates.

The Tennessean reports that drivers with vehicles registered in Tennessee can now pre-order, through the Imagination Library website, special license plates bearing the singer's face. A minimum of 1,000 orders are needed to put the plates into production; at publication time, 675 plates had already been pre-ordered. Once the plates go into production, it will take 4-6 months for them to arrive.

The special-edition Parton license plate costs $35, with proceeds (about $15.38, per the Tennessean) going to Parton's Imagination Library, specifically its efforts within Tennessee. Launched in Sevier County, Tenn. -- Parton's home county -- in 1995, the Imagination Library now provides free books to children all over the world.

“That’s one of the things I’m proudest of, of anything I’ve ever done," the artist admits. “You can’t educate enough children.

"A lot of that came from the fact that a lot of my own relatives didn’t get to go to school because we were mountain people. You have to get out and work and help feed the family," Parton adds. "My own dad couldn’t read and write. And my dad was very proud of me. He got to live long enough to see the Imagination Library do well, so he felt like he had done something good too — that he was the inspiration for it."

Parton recently released a new album, Pure & Simple, on Aug. 19, and is currently on the road in support of the project, on her Pure & Simple Tour.
