Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Patrick Rogers and his family made their way into their custom built home from Carlyle Homes Thursday (February 25) in Flint.

Rogers received a Purple Heart for his tour in Iraq. Rogers told KLTV, "Iraq from 2006 to 2007 during the surge. I was flight medic then. Suicide bomber. Got knocked out during the blast. Ton of explosives. Jacked up my neck, lower back. Didn’t know what else at the time you know, you get out. Grabbed the wounded, did my thing. Had an RPG blow up next to me because they breached the base."

Rogers and his family were surprised with the announcement during the 2014 Sunbelt Builders Show in San Antonio from Operation Finally Home and Carlyle Homes.

Operation Finally Home issued this statement, "Sgt. Rogers joined the Texas Army National Guard in 1994, following his high school graduation. He served as a medic and was deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan. On June 1, 2012, a suicide bomber carrying close to a ton of explosives crashed into the perimeter of the Forward Operating Base Salerno in Afghanistan, collapsing the mess hall where Rogers and other soldiers were eating. Uncovered and surrounded by heavy fire, Rogers rode in the back of a truck, gathering the wounded to transport then to the hospital. It wasn't until he was ordered to stop tending to other wounded soldiers that he finally allowed other medics to take care of his own injuries. His act of heroism resulted in numerous awards. Rogers currently suffers from multiple injuries, including a traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, shoulder and knee tears, spinal injuries and loss of hearing. Rogers retired from the military in July 2013."

Congratulations to Staff Sgt. Patrick Rogers and his family and thank you for your service to our country.
