You may have noticed the pungent smell, or seen them washed up on the shore; there are hundreds of dead fish floating for miles across Lake Palestine.

According to our news partner, KLTV, Greg Conley, with the kills and spills division of the Tyler branch of Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, says the fish are white bass, and that it is a single species kill. He tells KLTV that the white bass population has contracted a disease specific to their species.

Are the fish safe to consume?

The Kills and Spills Department says as long as the captured fish are fighting back, it's likely to be healthy and safe to eat. If the fish reacts slowly, it is unsafe to consume. Conley also notes that it's best not to swim in areas where there are dead fish.
