A sign in Hawkins, Texas that reads "Jesus Welcomes You to Hawkins" has Wisconsin's Freedom from Religion Foundation (FFRF) threatening legal action.

According to the report from KLTV, the sign in question is 18-feet wide, purple and gold and reads "Jesus Welcomes You To Hawkins." The sign has been there since 2011 after mayor Will Rogers first asked city council for permission to erect the sign before he became mayor.

According to the FFRF, the sign: "conveys a government preference for religion over non-religion." They have asked the city council to remove the sign because it violates the constitutional separation between church and state.

Mayor Rogers explains that it is not a particular church and that it has the community's full support. He says in the report that area churches, students, businesses and residents helped get the sign up.

The Hawkins city council plans to make the decision on what to do about the sign at an upcoming council meeting. According to the report, they cannot afford to fight the claims in court.

What do you think? Should a Wisconsin-based group even be involved in this issue at all? Should Hawkins have to remove the sign? Let us know in the comments section.
