Wood County officials have confirmed a drowning at Lake Hawkins in Wood County that occurred about 6:40 p.m. today, according to multiple media reports.

Wood County game warden Derek Spitzer confirmed a 27-year-old man was swimming out to a buoy on the lake and when he tried to return to shore, he began to struggle to stay above water. KLTV is reporting people on the banks called 911, but the man was pronounced dead on the scene.

The Tyler Morning Telegraph is reporting it is not believed that alcohol involved in the incident.

The man's name has not yet been released. We will update with more information as it comes available from Wood County officials.

Lake Hawkins is northwest of the town of Hawkins and Highway 80 in Wood County.
