The City of Tyler and the Lighten Up East Texas Committee is challenging East Texans to lose weight and live healthier lives.

During a press conference Tuesday to kickoff this year’s event, Northeast Texas Public Health District Director, George Roberts talked about the importance of taking on the challenge to fight obesity in Tyler and East Texas.

Roberts said the goal of the event is to encourage East Texans to take control of their health by making smart choices, include physical activities, and lose weight in a healthy and fun way.

Roberts went on to say more than 30 percent of Texans are considered to be overweight, and obesity can lead to other health issues, including sleep problems, diabetes, heart attacks, and even cancer.

Participants who want to be a part of the regional weight loss challenge are encouraged to sign up and weigh in at Bergfeld Park in Tyler beginning at 9 a.m. till noon November 3rd. There is no cost to participate and Allen Samuels Tyler is offering up a grand prize, a 2013 Dodge Dart. Other sponsors include Brookshires , and Lighthouse for the Blind.

Individuals and companies from all over East Texas are encouraged to participate.
