Longview has paid rocker Ted Nugent $16,000 to not perform at Longview’s Fourth of July festival. According to reports a spokesperson for the festival felt that Ted Nugent was not right for the event.

Longview had a verbal agreement with the rock singer, scheduling him as the headliner of the festival. In order to break the agreement, Longview decided to pay Ted Nugent half of his performance fee which comes $16,000. The performance was to be at Maude Cobb Convention Center in Longview.

According to KLTV, the decision was made because of comments the rocker made concerning President Barack Obama this past January. Nugent had refereed to the President as a “subhuman mongrel.” Nugent, who campaigned with Republican Texas Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Greg Abbott during the time of  the controversy, apologized for those comments.

Abbott’s rival, Democrat Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis, criticized Abbott because of his relationship with rocker Ted Nugent.

Back in 2012, Nugent was removed from performing at a military base after he made this comment about President Obama: “dead or in jail by this time next year” if Obama were re-elected that year.

Ted Nugent has always been very vocal about his political views. Do you believe that his right to speech is being violated? Do you side with the decision made by the City of Longview? Or, do you feel that he should be allowed to perform regardless of his political views? Let us know your thoughts.
