Measles Outbreak Surpasses 100 Cases in 2015

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released new stats on Monday that showed the number of measles cases in 2015 reaching 102.

Between Jan. 1 and Jan. 30, the CDC reported the record number of cases from 14 different states. Most of the cases originated from an outbreak at Disney California Adventure Park in Anaheim last month.

The CDC said majority of those infected with the disease were unvaccinated. Officials say they believe the outbreak was a result of someone from overseas visiting and not being vaccinated.

According to TIME, the U.S. declared measles eliminated in 2000, but the recent rise of parents choosing not to vaccinate their children has caused the disease to make a comeback. This has many health officials worried, as the MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella) is considered almost 100 percent accurate.

A recent poll showed that 92 percent of doctors believe the recent measles outbreak is to blame on parents who are not vaccinating their children.

Measles is highly contagious and can cause deafness, pneumonia and brain damage in children.
