The Grand Ole Opry got a great present for its 90th birthday — a new puppy! The Opry partnered with Miranda Lambert’s animal welfare organization MuttNation Foundation last weekend (Oct. 9) to promote pet adoption and send several pups home with new owners in Music City, but the Opry family didn’t expect to end up with one of their own.

Charlie, a lab/terrier mix, won the hearts of Opry staffers who will now take turns caring for the canine, who will serve as the official Opry Dog. Charlie even got an opportunity to make his debut on the famous stage in Lambert’s arms. The puppy and his siblings were found in rural Oklahoma and dropped off at Lambert’s Redemption Ranch by a good samaritan in July. All three found loving homes in Nashville.

Charlie is gearing up for Opry Goes Pink, an event benefitting breast cancer research, on Oct. 27, at which Kacey Musgraves is slated to “flip the switch” to wash the stage in pink. The word is the Opry pup is prepping his outfit for the occasion.

Throughout the month of October, patrons of the Opry are encouraged to use the code “Paws” when purchasing tickets to donate a portion of the ticket sale to MuttNation. The sales of special merchandise like dog collars and “Puppy Opry” prints will also benefit the foundation.

Lambert and her mother founded MuttNation eight years ago and has raised more than $2.1 million to care for, and raise awareness for, homeless pets. Its annual fundraiser, called Cause for the Paws, was held in September in Luckenbach, Texas.
