Parents Beware: Bullying is on the Rise

Me and Chloe
Amy Austin

The subject of “bullying” is something I know all to well. I wish I didn’t, but I do. My daughter was a subject of bullying for many of her elementary and middle school years.

The hurt and pain is so deep that some of our children never recover, or are scarred so deeply that it changes who they were born to be.When I came across this article, I cringed. ChildLine is a children’s website in the U.K. that provides private and confidential services for children and young people up to the age of 19. This site reports that they have seen an 87%  increase in requests for help over online bullying or cyber bullying in the last year.

These numbers are alarming. What do professionals have to say on Bullying in East Texas?

Last year, Shelly Judd, Director of Parent Services in Tyler shared some facts on bullying from a study by Barbara Coloroso:

More than 1 and 3 middle and high schools students say they don’t feel safe at school.Close to 30 percent believe it’s OK to hit or threaten someone who makes them angry.

The majority of children never report the abuse and bullying. This was the case with my daughter. There was one time that I actually saw the bullying happen when my daughter was in second grade.

Of course, I immediately addressed it, but the abuse continued. My daughter says she got “good at hiding it” because she didn’t want me to be upset. It continued through the early years of high school, and we finally learned in an extremely awful way.

I’m sure most of you are asking yourselves,”How could the mother not know?” Believe me, I’ve asked my self that same question over and over again. But if you think that your child will tell you, it usually doesn’t work that way. So we have to be diligent in reaching out to not only our kids, but to teachers, coaches, friends and whomever is around our kids.

Today there are so many opportunities for our kids to be bullied, not only at school or other activities, but there is cyber bullying too.
