Reba McEntire Reportedly Starring in New ‘Southern Gothic Soap Opera’ on ABC
THR reports that ABC has secured a script-plus-penalty commitment for an in-development "Southern Gothic soap opera" created and executive-produced by Cherry and starring McEntire. The action begins following a suspected terror attack at a Fourth of July parade in Oxblood, Ky.; the FBI sends in "a cocky agent of Middle Eastern descent" to investigate the incident, but, in tandem with "the mercurial local sheriff," he discovers even darker secrets.
Cherry, who created Desperate Housewives, will serve as the still-untitled TV show's showrunner, along with his longtime producing partner Sabrina Wind. Mindy Schultheis and Michael Hanel from Acme Productions will be executive producers, and McEntire will be credited as an executive producer as well.
McEntire is, of course, no stranger to acting roles: She starred in Tremors; lent her voice to Charlotte's Web; and played Annie Oakley in Annie Get Your Gun on Broadway. McEntire also starred in her own WB / CW sitcom, Reba, for six seasons, and briefly starred in Malibu Country, on ABC.
