Today marks the 74th anniversary of one of the most devastating days in America's history.

2,403 Americans were killed and another 1,178 others were wounded that day. That day also brought the United States into World War II.

Today is a day of remembrance and honor for those that served during that era.

I ran across these little known but interesting facts on HuffingtonPost.com.

  1. Most of battleships sunk that day were resurrected. Eight battleships were targeted during the attacks with all but two repaired and returned to the U.S. Navy's fleet.
  2. Pearl Harbor veterans have the choice to be laid to rest with their fallen comrades.
  3. The U.S.S. Arizona still leaks fuel and oil. Visitors claim it's as if the ship were still bleeding.
  4. During the 2013 government shutdown, a group of service members and their families volunteered during the two weeks to take care of the memorial.
  5. Many tourists from Japan visit the Pearl Harbor memorial.
  6. A baby girl's remains are still entombed in a sunken battleship. A crew member of the U.S.S. Utah was storing an urn of his daughter's ashes in his locker with plans to scatter them at sea. The December attack prevented that. She was given a formal ceremony in 2003.
  7. There is an estimated 5 million gallons of fuel collected in a large plume under Pearl Harbor. It is currently stable and not a threat to drinking water.
