A convenience store clerk in New Hampshire was fired after six years on the job for refusing to sell cigarettes to a 20-year-old man who was paying with an EBT cash card. Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) is an electronic system that automates the delivery, redemption, and reconciliation of issued public assistance benefits.

There are two types of EBT cards -- one that is used specifically used for food items and other groceries, and one that is used basically as a debit card that can be used to buy anything.
