Gunman Opens Fire Outside a Texas Courthouse, Kills One

BEAUMONT – One person is dead and three wounded after a gunman opened fire in front of a Southeast Texas Courthouse, according to Associated Press reports.

Police in Beaumont say the man suspected in today’s shootings near the Jefferson County Courthouse has been injured and captured.

Justice Department Rejects New Texas Voter ID Law

WASHINGTON — A new photo ID requirement for Texas voters has been rejected by the U.S. Justice Department. The agency says the state has failed to show that the new law has neither a discriminatory purpose nor effect. The department also says it objected to the law because many Hispanic voters lack state-issued identification.

Smoke From a Distant Fire

TYLER - Smoke from a 2,000 acreage controlled burn in Houston County is beginning to fill the skies in Smith County.

The Smith County Fire Marshalls office tells us the Texas Forestry Service is conducting the burn off in Kennard and the strong winds blowing from the south is moving the smoke into parts of East Texas including Smith County.

Seven People Named in Health Care Fraud Scheme

DALLAS -- Seven people have been named in a health care fraud scheme including the owner of a medical service provider.

The federal indictment alleges the defendants bilked Medicare and Medicaid of nearly $375 million for more than five years beginning in January 2006.

The indictment names Jacque Roy, a doctor who owned Medistat Group Associates in Desoto and alleges he led a scheme that billed Medicare for home health care services that were not medically necessary or were not done.
