'Soul Surfer' Carrie Underwood's Acting Debut

Our featured artist this week is the talented Carrie Underwood. Besides her obvious singing career, Carrie debuted in her first major motion picture this year, 'Soul Surfer.' The DVD was released yesterday. Soul Surfer tells the true story of teen surfer Bethany Hamilton, who lost her arm in a shark attack and courageously overcame all odds to become a champion again, through her sheer determination and unwavering faith. The film features an all-star cast, including Anna Sophia Robb and Helen Hunt, with Carrie Underwood in her film debut, and Dennis Quaid.

'Rio' Flies High at Weekend Box Office

Once again, an animated movie found itself ruling the weekend box office.

In this case, it was 'Rio.' The high-flying kids' movie, which features the voice talent of Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg and more, pulled in an estimated $40 million, making it the year's best opening thus far.

Coming in at a distant second was the much-anticipated 'Scream 4,' which opened with an underwhelming $19.3 million. That number is especially disappointing, considering 'Scream 3' grossed $34.7 million in its opening weekend 11 years ago.

Country superstar Carrie Underwood made her movie debut as a church youth-group counselor in Soul Surfer Friday, joining a select but growing list of American Idol alums trying to leap from concert stages to the big screen. Leading the way is Season 3 Idol finalist Jennifer Hudson, who already scored an Oscar and has another project in the works. Check out the movie trailer after the jump.
