Last week, Governor Greg Abbott made the announcement that he was going to designate Monday, Feb. 2 as Chris Kyle Day in Texas.

Governor Abbott made the declaration while speaking to a Texas Veterans of Foreign Wars convention in Austin. It was met with a standing ovation.

Kyle is the US Navy Seal whose book was made into a biopic in the blockbuster movie 'American Sniper.' The Midlothian native is considered a hero by numerous Americans, myself included, and I applaud the decision to make this Chris Kyle Day.

In 2013, Kyle was killed at a gun range in North Texas. The man charged with his killing will stand trial beginning in the next few weeks.
