An accidental shooting has a left a Tyler boy dead after he shot himself with his mother’s gun.

Tyler Police say 4-year-old Jaylen Johnson found the weapon in his mother’s car parked outside the family home at 3204 Fairlawn in Tyler.

Investigators say the child’s mother works for the Smith County Sheriff’s Department and believe the boy was shot with her service weapon.

Jaylen had just celebrated his birthday earlier this month. The incident occurred just before 12:30 Sunday afternoon and remains under investigation.

East Texas Soldier Killed in Enemy Fire

WASHINGTON — An Army Ranger from East Texas has been killed in an enemy attack in Afghanistan.

The Pentagon says 23-year-old Tanner Higgins of Yantis died Saturday when his unit came under enemy fire. Higgins was assigned to a unit based out of Fort Stewart, Ga.

Suspect Arrested in Tyler Robbery

TYLER - A man suspected of robbing a Tyler Gas Station early Saturday is in custody after police arrested him a short time after the hold-up .

Darrell Dewayne Wallace, 38, is charged with aggravated robbery after he allegedly robbed the Exxon Gas Station located at 1204 W. Gentry. The store clerk told police the suspect held him a knife point demanding money from the cash register.  The suspect  then on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

About 10 minutes later, Officer Brennon Ewen located a subject matching the description of the robber at Dargan and Harmony.  The suspect was later identified by the clerk as the same subject who robbed the store.

Longview Police Searching for Suspect in Fatal Shooting

LONGVIEW -  Police responded to the shooting Saturday night in the 800 Block of Dalston Avenue.  When officers arrived they found the shooting victim, 38-year old Francisco Roque laying in the yard of the residence.  The victim had been shot and later died of his wounds.

According to witnesses, the victim and another man, identified as 26 year old Jose Amaro Olivarez had been drinking. The two men began arguing when Olivarez took out a handgun and shot Roque several  times . Olivarez took off before police arrived.

Police are asking for help in locating Olivarez, 26 of Longview. He is described as having short, dark colored hair and a long beard tied into braids. Olivarez was last seen driving a 1998 Ford Winstar van. The van was later located abandoned in Harrison County.

Tombstones Recovered

VAN ZANDT CO - The Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office along with the Edgewood Police Department recovered three (3) tombstones near the Oak Hill Cemetery in Edgewood, Texas.  One of the tombstones is marked with the name J. Kenneth Davidson, the second is marked with the names Frank and Merle Riney, and the third is marked Howard and Alta Sparks.

It is unknown how the tombstones got to the location and where they were placed.  The Oak Hill Cemetery has no record of the names buried in their cemetery.

The Van Zandt County Clerk’s Office is currently researching the names of the people with the hopes of determining where the tombstones belong. If anyone has any information please contact the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office at 903-567-4133.
