Tyler to Celebrate ‘Heritage Days’ on Saturday, May 19

Calling all Civil War buffs! Tyler is celebrating “Heritage Days” this Saturday, May 19. The Tyler Parks and Recreation Department has brought “Heritage Days” to Tyler for the past four years. The event takes place on the beautiful  grounds of the 1859 Goodman-LeGrand House and Museum from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and admission is free.

Don’t miss the numerous displays of Civil War  memorabilia, and the reenactments from the Civil War re-en actors, with Civil War weaponry, rifle brigade, cannon, medical instruments, awesome period clothing and tons more!

Expect live demonstrations by heritage artisans including spinners, weavers, quilters, a blacksmith and more, with their crafts being displayed on the grounds in front of the Goodman home. Some of the crafts will be available for sale.

This year the Tyler Parks and Recreation Department has scheduled historical presentations by Mr. Norris White on “Forgotten Confederates – Black Texans in the Confederate Army” at 11 a.m. that morning and at noon as well. Mr. Jack Dyess will be speaking at 1 p.m. and at 2 p.m. on “Myths on the War Between the States.”

Two authors will be on hand for book signings on books that cover Tyler’s pictorial history, as well as historical fiction set in post-Civil War era.

Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy the day. Musicians and singers will be playing vintage music selections on the grounds, with dulcimer music to be played inside the museum.
