TYLER -- A Tyler man has received two life sentences after he pleaded guilty Monday on charges of shooting a Smith County Deputy in March of last year.

Christopher Summerville opened fire on Deputy Josh Caulkins as he and other law enforcement officers were serving a federal warrant at a local apartment complex.

A bullet proof vest is credited to saving the deputy's life. Summerville pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated assault on a public servant. He also pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.

Smith County Deputy Constables Arrested

TYLER -- Three Smith County Deputy Constables have been arrested for violating the Texas Private Security Act. The investigation which began in 2011 by DPS Regulatory agents and the Texas Rangers found the constables provided security at three locations without a license.

Charged are Precinct 3 deputy constables, Monty Ward, Mark Pierce and Justin Stockwell. Deputy Thomas Burns has not been arrested yet but does have an outstanding warrant.

TYLER -- Tyler Police have released a surveillance photo of a suspect who robbed the Speedy Exxon Convenience Store on West Front Street last Friday night. The store clerk told police the suspect was armed with a knife and demanded the money from the cash register.

The suspect fled on foot and was last seen wearing a solid green coat, possibly an old military style jacket, dark pants and a tan and brown colored scarf hiding the suspects face.

Seven Longview Stores Sold Tobacco to Minors

LONGVIEW -- Seven Longview retailers have been cited for selling tobacco to minors. The undercover stings utilized 14-16 year old minors, accompanied by Longview Police officers who entered stores and attempted to buy tobacco products.

The locations that sold tobacco products to minors include: Food Fast, 1316 Alpine Rd.; Super 1 Foods, 1217 E. Marshall; Food Fast, 427 E. Loop 281; E-Z Mart, 1910 Judson Rd.; Valero, 3400 Gilmer Rd.; J&B Food Mart, 1600 S. Green; Briana's Stop & Shop (Texaco), 3122 Estes Parkway.

 

Three Die in Nacogdoches County Accident

NACOGDOCHES COUNTY -- Wet roads are partly to blame for a fatal accident last night in Nacogdoches County that claimed the lives of three people, including two children. DPS says a car driven by Annie Jones, of St. Augustine, hydroplaned, left the roadway and struck a tree.

Jones and 12-year-old Armontay Woods were pronounced dead at the scene. Anfernee Diggles, 14, died at a local hospital a short time after the accident. Another child, 11 year-old-Amauryia Diggles is hospitalized in good condition. The accident occurred at 5:25 p.m. on Highway 21 near Chireno.

 

Man on Trial for Torturing Neighbor

WEATHERFORD — Jurors in Weatherford are set to begin hearing evidence today in the trial of a North Texas man who's accused of torturing his former neighbor on a deer-skinning device.

Jeffrey Maxwell faces up to life in prison if he's convicted of kidnapping and sexual assault.
