It’s been a little over 20 years since we were first introduced to Dawn Wiener, the subject of Todd Solondz’s cult indie favorite Welcome to the Dollhouse. Although we were led to believe Dawn Wiener was dead in the Solondz Cinematic Universe (thanks to the opening of Palindromes), she’s very much alive in the new trailer for Wiener-Dog, the semi-Dollhouse sequel in which the infinitely charming Greta Gerwig takes on the role originated by Heather Matarazzo.

There was a bit of backlash when Gerwig was first cast as Dawn Wiener, with some criticizing the actress for being “too pretty” for the part — which is kind of insulting to Matarazzo. I get why people were annoyed, and while we don’t get to spend too much time with her in this trailer, Gerwig certainly acts the part even if she doesn’t quite look it.

Dawn is 20 years older in Wiener-Dog, but still every bit as awkward and eager to be cool, as evidenced by her hasty decision to join Kieran Culkin for a road trip to get some meth. Meth! But this isn’t just Dawn‘s story; as is often the case with Solondz, Wiener-Dog tells four interconnecting stories, featuring Danny DeVito, Zosia Mamet, Ellen Burstyn, Julie Delpy and Tracy Letts.

The film received mostly positive reviews out of Sundance, and in his review, our former Editor-in-Chief Mike Sampson said that it feels like it’s playing “an elaborate practical joke on people who might think it’s just a movie about a lovable little dog,” and that it doesn’t feel like a typical Solondz movie…until it does.

Here’s the official synopsis:

From director Todd Solondz (WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE, HAPPINESS), WIENER-DOG is a dark, starkly funny story of a single dog and the many different people she touches over her short lifetime. Man’s best friend starts out teaching a young boy some contorted life lessons before being taken in by a compassionate vet tech named Dawn Wiener. Dawn reunites with someone from her past and sets off on a road trip. After leaving Dawn, Wiener-Dog encounters a floundering film professor, as well as an embittered elderly woman and her needy granddaughter—all longing for something more. Solondz’s perversely dark comedy offers an appallingly honest look at the American experience, brought to life by its all-star cast.

Wiener-Dog hits theaters on June 24.
