Staggering $6.5 Million of Meth Hidden in Flower Truck Seized at Texas Border
U.S. Customs and Border Protection security officers made a $6.5 million seizure of narcotics in Laredo, Texas last week.
The hefty bust was made on August 9 at the World Trade Bridge, according to a release from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection office.
The release, dated August 12, contained further details on the incident. An officer at the World Trade Bridge directed a refrigerated trailer hauling a commercial shipment of flowers to a secondary inspection point.
A canine unit was brought out for a free-air sniff and signaled. A non-intrusive inspection followed and CBP officers discovered "a total of 712.54 pounds of alleged methamphetamine" among the blooming flowers.
The seizure has an estimated street value of $6,551,910.
The meth in the flowers wasn't the only seizure made by officers that day.
Customs and Border Protection officers at the Otay mesa Commercial Facility stopped a 35-year-old man who was driving a tractor-trailer.
The man had a shipment and was anticipating entry into the United States from Mexico. He was a valid border crossing card holder, according to the release.
Officers inspected the man's load and discovered 378 pounds of methamphetamine "hidden in a shipment of fresh tomatillos".
The drugs were contained within 50 packages and had an estimated street value of $453,600.
