State Fair of Texas Leftover Food to be Donated
Another successful State Fair of Texas has come and gone!
This year, the event brought in nearly 2.4 million people in its 24-day run! People rode the Ferris wheel, some got into fights and, of course, there was tons of food! Let's be honest, the food is one of the main reasons to go!
The Texas State Fair is, of course, the reason we have such creations like deep fried pineapple upside down cake, deep fried biscuits and gravy and, of course, the highly confusing-yet-intriguing deep fried Jell-O.
But what happens to the food that's leftover from the fair? First, you may think that there isn't any leftover food, but turns out there is- and what do they do with that leftover food? They donate the food to families in need.
It's become a tradition now for Big Tex and vendors of the State Fair of Texas to gather round on the day after the fair ends and team up with State Fair Cares, where they then donate their leftover food and drink to North Texas families in need.
According to Culture Map, the tradition started back in 2015. This year, the day after the fair ended, more than 80 food and beverage concessionaires donated what was left unused to local Fair Park area food pantries and shelters as part of the State Fair Cares initiative!
Culture Map says that donations are based on what vendors are serving, but could range from potatoes and tomatoes to bread, hot dog buns, canned soup, cheese, animal crackers, cereal, jars of pickles, sugar, and flour, now gifted to local food pantries. There's even produce and frozen items.
In an effort to not waste food, and give back to the community, this has to be the most Texan thing ever!
