East Texas Police Officer Dies in Traffic Accident

A one vehicle accident Sunday has claimed the life of an off-duty Arp police officer.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said Richard Wayne Johnson, 37, died at the scene after he lost control of his vehicle, veered into oncoming traffic and overturned.

The wreck occurred about 1:30 p.m. Sunday on Interstate 20 near Marshall in Harrison County.

Johnson was with the Arp Police Department since 2009 and was also the Arp schools resource officer.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
