High School Student Gets Time in the Spotlight Despite Disability [VIDEO]

A bastketball team in El Paso is making national headlines after a story about their team ran on the local news. No, it wasn’t a story about how far they’ve gone in the playoffs or a crazy three point shot. It’s a story about a team, and the opposing team, showing support to a member of their team with a disability.

Coronado High School Thunderbirds team manager Mitchell Marcus has made his love of the game no secret. Mitchell was named team manager because of his developmental disorder, which keeps him off the court. Even though he isn’t on the court he is at every practice, every game, every team meeting, and is the star of the team. On the last game of the regular season, coach Peter Morales told Mitchell to suit up, he’s going in.

Mitchell went into the game with Coronado leading by 10 points and a minute and a half left in the game. As he took the court the crowd started chanting his name. His teammates did everything they could to get him the opportunity to score, but unfortunately Mitchell missed the shots he made.

Within the last few seconds of the game, the opposing team got the ball after it had been knocked out of bounds by Marcus. The fairy tale looked like it was about to end. But senior basketball star Jonathan Martinez who played for the opposing team had a moment of clarity and knew what he had to do.

“I was raised to treat others how you want to be treated,” Jonathon says. “I just though Mitchell deserved his chance, deserved his opportunity.”

What Jonathon did was yell out Mitchell’s name, then threw the ball right to him, allowing Mitchell to score and allow his team to win by 15 points. As the ball went through the net and the buzzer sounded, the crowd rushed the court and Mitchell, chanting his name and putting him in the spotlight. Talk about sportsmanship.
