Taylor Swift was all of 16 when she released her debut album. By comparison, her recent tourmate, 19-year-old Hunter Hayes, is a bit of a fogey — but by any other measure, he’s releasing his first record at an impressively young age.

The budding hitmaker, who got his big break co-writing a track from Rascal Flatts’ ‘Nothing Like This Album’ and scored his first top 30 hit earlier this year with ‘Storm Warning,’ will release his self-titled debut on October 11.

“It’s a little bit of everything,” Hayes says of the album. “We kind of tried to do as many different things as we could, but still stay true to the kind of music that I like to make, as well as my country roots. I try to incorporate as much of that as possible into my music. We had all kinds of fun with different versions of that.”

Hayes had a strong hand in the album’s instrumental sound, handling a wide variety of stringed instruments throughout the 12 tracks. “I didn’t know that there were that many instruments to play, but we’re talking like different versions of an acoustic guitar,” he says. “High strung, 12-strung, regular … four different kinds of mandolins … things like that. It was fun.”
