‘American Idol’ duo Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina have been dogged by rumors of romance for months — to the point where their fans have given the alleged couple their own mashed-up nickname, McLaina.

Anyone hoping for a public confession of love can stop hoping, however. Although both of them have winked and played along with the rumors, both McCreery and Alaina have come out to officially lay them to rest.

“You know, the Lauren Alaina one started from day one, but I can promise you there was never anything there, never will be anything there,” McCreery told Taste of Country in response to a question about rumors. “We’re good friends, and that’s it. The ‘McLaina’ thing: It never happened. I know those fans, and they can talk, but there never was anything to it.”

“I heard forever that I was dating Scotty! And that wasn’t true,” Alaina confirmed, laughing off the constant speculation about her love life. “There was an article in a magazine one time that said I was talking to ['Twilight' star] Taylor Lautner.”

They may not be sharing a relationship, but the young stars could share the charts in October — both of them are set to release their debut albums next month, with McCreery’s ‘Clear as Day’ arriving October 4 and Alaina’s ‘Wildflower’ reaching stores the following week.
