Matthew McConaughey Looks Completely Unrecognizable On ‘Dallas Buyer’s Club’ Set

This is Matthew McConaughey. We know, right? McConaughey – frequently seen looking quite buff running on the beach – lost 40 pounds to play a man suffering from AIDS for the upcoming indie film ‘The Dallas Buyer’s Club‘ and looks almost unrecognizable while filming a scene on the New Orleans set.

Matthew McConaughey will surely be nominated for an Oscar this year for his performance in ‘Magic Mike‘ but it looks as if he might be gunning for another Oscar next year with ‘Dallas Buyer’s Club.’ McConaughey stars alongside Jared Leto and Jennifer Garner in the real life story of Ron Woodroof, a straight man from Texas who, after being diagnosed with full-blown AIDS found himself on the brink of death after taking the only FDA-approved drug for HIV, AZT. So Woodruff started an underground drug ring of smuggled non-toxic medications from around the world, which naturally, did not sit well with government authorities.

McConaughey is currently filming in New Orleans and, wowza, he doesn’t even look like Matthew McConaughey. And yeah, we get it, that’s the point of acting but this takes it to the extreme. Especially from the guy who was starring in ‘Fool’s Gold’ and ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.’ On the one hand, we like this new era of McConaughey (he was generally brilliant in ‘Magic Mike’ and very good in ‘Bernie’ as well), but this looks…unhealthy.

Included below is another shot of McConaughey on set filming a scene where he gets arrested and if you didn’t know better, you’d think that was just some general shot of a Texas deadbeat getting arrested.

What do you think? We’ve seen a bunch of actors (Christian Bale and Matt Damon among them) who’ve lost a lot of weight for a movie role. Do you think it’s worth it?
