Gilmer graduate Gus Johnson will not be making the final cut to the roster of 53 for the Dallas Cowboys.

The former SFA Lumberjack was impressive in his final preseason outing Thursday night, but according to an early report, it wasn't enough to make the team ... yet, and kind of.

Johnson probably could have gained 200 yards and scored five touchdowns against the Texans and still would have not made the final cut. 'Gus the Bus' has been a pleasant surprise to the Cowboys' coaching staff, but most of the experts will tell you Johnson was playing for one of two things to happen.

No. 1: Make the Cowboys practice squad. There, Johnson can continue to develop and continue to impress and possibly make the team later in the season, especially if one of the Cowboys' three running backs goes down with an injury.

No. 2: Get signed by another NFL team who was impressed enough with his preseason performances.

The odds seem to be in Johnson's favor to make the practice squad, which, when you consider he was basically on the outside looking in for an NFL tryout a couple of months ago, is a very positive thing.

So, great job, Gus the Bus of Gilmer Buckeyes and SFA fame.  You've made East Texas proud and hopefully your NFL ride is far from over.
