Tim McGraw is developing a crime drama as a starring television vehicle for TNT.

According to Deadline, McGraw is attached to a new project in development from Sony Pictures TV, the production team of Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly, and Michael Dinner. Titled Robbers, the series is based on Christopher Cook’s debut novel from 2000, which Cook and Dinner are adapting for the small screen, with Dinner set to direct.

McGraw, Dinner, Beverly and Timberman are slated to executive produce the series, with McGraw starring as Ray Bob, one of two drifters carrying out a Texas crime spree. The story also involves a police officer and a girl who becomes involved in a complicated love triangle. McGraw's character is described as "the worst of the worst."

Deadline describes the show as being "in the literary-noir tradition of Cormac McCarthy’s No Country for Old Men," and compares Cook's novel to Elmore Leonard. Dinner, Timberman and Beverly and Sony were all previously involved in Justified, which recently wrapped its sixth and final season on FX. That show was based on a short story by Leonard.

According to the report, McGraw — a veteran film actor with well-respected credits including Friday Night Lights and The Blind Side — has been pursued by other shows, including TNT's The Last Ship and Wild Blue at Fox, but this is the first time he's agreed to actively pursue a series. The project was green-lighted soon after his name became attached.

McGraw will appear on the big screen next in Tomorrowland, which stars George Clooney and is set for release in the U.S. on May 22. The singer will perform at both the Taste of Country Music and Country Jam festivals this summer.
