I love all three of these country legends, but Johnny Lee has a special place in my heart. The first time I met Johnny, it was at the amphitheater at Bergfeld Park in Tyler. It was fall of 1991 and KNUE and the Texas Lottery Commission were throwing a party to celebrate Texas getting a lottery.
Johnny Lee agreed to perform at the event and we were so excited. I was especially excited because I had been a fan of Johnny’s since the Urban Cowboy days!
It happened to rain that day, right in the middle of Johnny’s performance. I was on the sidelines and grabbed an umbrella and went on stage to hold it over Johnny. Well Johnny stopped in the middle of his song (I was so embarrassed) and asked the crowd if I should sing along with him! I can’t sing and I was getting really nervous.
The crowd chanted yes and so I was going to sing with Johnny Lee. We sang “Lookin’ For Love” and I ended up having the time of my life! Even though I’m certain I was “off key!” Johnny later told me he found that song for the Urban Cowboy movie by accident. Check out the video below with Johnny Lee and Ralph Emory to find out more about the song!
I wish I had video of that duet, but I remember it like it was yesterday. I can’t wait to see him at the show, along with Mel Tillis and Earl Thomas Conley.
