‘Idol’ Contestant Colton Dixon Warned Against ‘Religious Tweeting’

When a contestant makes it to the live shows on American Idol, they are set up with their own Twitter and Facebook accounts so all of their fans can follow them. The contestants are allowed to pretty much post whatever they please, but they are warned against posting religious things that could harm they’re chances in the competition. While most of the contestants follow those recommendations, some post whatever they feel. Colton Dixon is one of them.

After being warned by Idol execs to not be overly religious online, because it can sway the viewers’ votes, Dixon wears his love for Christ on his sleeve — literally. He wears a bracelet engraved with “Jeremiah 29:11″ during his performances. Colton thought about the advice but decided against taking it. He explained his reasoning in an interview with

“When we first started the Twitter and Facebook stuff, they said beware of political and religious tweets just because it can turn off voters or whatever. But, you know, being a Christian is who I am. It is a part of me musically. It is what I want to do after the show — go into Christian music.”

His posts have indeed sparked controversy with some people saying Colton is just being self-righteous and that he is harming the public view of Christianity. One user recently suggested the crooner “can’t Tebow his way to a win,” referencing Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow, who made his love for God no secret during his time as a quarterback.

Here’s how Dixon responded:

“I don’t follow Tebow. I follow a guy named Jesus. I’m just trusting His plans. Whatever that may be.”

Regardless, Colton will ultimately be judged by his talent and presence on the Idol stage. And at this rate, it looks like he will be sticking around for a while. He definitely has my vote.

What do you think? Do you think it is appropriate for him to tweet about his Christianity? Catch Colton and the rest of the Top 10 as they perform for your votes tonight on FOX.
