We all know the old saying, "The stars at night are big and bright ... deep in the Heart of Texas!"

Those stars aren't the only thing that is big here in the Lone Star State! We have some of the biggest, baddest food challenges in the nation.

The television show 'Man vs. Food' made a few Texas joints famous, and If you're up for it you can try to take on a 72-ounce steak in Amarillo, the Don Juan El Taco Grande in Austin, or the Four Horsemen Challenge in San Antonio.

What are these culinary concoctions, you ask? Well strap in, and make sure you brought your appetite, because these aren't for the faint of heart!

  1. The 'Big Tex' -- the 72-ounce steak challenge at the Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo. Made famous by 'Man vs. Food,' you will have 60 minutes to eat the four-and-a-half-pound monster, along with buttered bread rolls, a shrimp cocktail, baked potato, ranch beans, and a family sized salad.
  2. The Don Juan El Taco Grande. Located at Juan in a Million in Austin, this challenge consists of eight of the famous breakfast tacos. They are filled with potatoes, egg, cheese, bacon, and served in a tortilla shell. There is no time limit specified on the challenge, but each taco is more than a pound each!
  3. The Four Horseman Challenge. This is only available at Chunky's Burgers & More in San Antonio. You will have 60 minutes to eat eight ounces of beef with Ghost Chile Pepper on it. Sounds easy, right? This challenge is sure to set everything you have on fire! Only four people have completed it.

I am sure there are many more places to challenge yourself or a friend to a spectacular eating display. These three are the tip of the iceberg, but may be a good start on the list.

I am probably going to forego the Don Juan El Taco Grande, the gastric intestinal pyrotechnics may be more than I can bear. However the 72 -ounce steak challenge I may be down for. Anyone want to take a road trip with me?
