Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass and 440 other mayors across the country are asking their cities to go the extra mile when it comes to volunteering.

"The Extra Mile" is a national program that is designed to help communities become more volunteer-oriented.

November 1 marked the kick-off the push for this initiative in Tyler. Bass asked residents of Tyler to take a little more time to volunteer or just help out someone in their community. And to take the initiative even further, Bass said that it is equally important to recognize those who are helping others. Every piece of encouragement or positive thinking will help make the community a better place.

This initiative is intended to be continued far into the future, but it needs your help to be successful. Take a little time and give back to your community or encourage someone who is volunteering to keep up the great work. Even these small actions can make a big difference in your community.
