A Van ISD employee was shot during a training class for concealed carry of firearms late Wednesday (Feb. 27) evening, according to a report from the Tyler Morning Telegraph.

The report says the incident happened during a class sponsored by the district that was training school staff members to hold a concealed carry license.

KLTV in Tyler is reporting the injured staff member is maintenance worker Glenn Geddie, who is at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler in fair condition.

Here is the statement released from Van ISD:

At the conclusion of the CHL training on February 27, 2013, one certified person stayed for private instruction with the instructor and had a mechanical malfunction with his weapon. With the assistance of the instructor, the malfunction was addressed, but the gun misfired and the bullet ricocheted coming back to strike the VISD employee in the left leg. The VISD employee was attended to at the scene and transferred to Tyler for further treatment. The injury is not life threatening or disabling. Because of privacy and security issues we cannot make any further statement.

School board member Leslie Goode spoke to the newspaper and confirmed the accident, although he still supported the decision to allow certain members of the school district to carry firearms.

Van Independent School District is one of several East Texas school systems that have voted to allow certain teachers and staff members to carry concealed firearms on campus.
