Country gal Skylar Laine showed us a different side of her musical personality on tonight’s (April 4) episode of ‘American Idol.’ While we normally see her singing and stomping around the stage like a Reba McEntire-Miranda Lambert hybrid — lookout, Blake! — she chose to show off her soft and sensitive side with Bette Midler’s power ballad ‘Wind Beneath My Wings.’

Looking gorgeous in a magenta gown, as opposed to jeans and boots, Laine sang the slow parts beautifully but when she hit the end, she showed up in a big, big way, proving that you don’t need to be fast to be fierce. She was sensitive when she needed to be, and turned things up a notch at just the right time. How does someone so young become so seasoned? Well, in Laine’s case, she’s a natural, with solid instincts.

While there is always a battle to be consistent and true to yourself, yet take risks and try new things, Laine showed us her full range and exactly who she is — by injecting the song with a little bit of country twang. Her voice is utterly massive and she ended the episode, which let the contestants choose songs from the ’80s, on the highest of notes.
