  • Icy road conditions in East Texas have already led to one death.
  • A woman from Shelbyville left the roadway and crashed into trees.

Icy road conditions surprised many East Texas motorists in the early morning hours of January 15, 2024. The Lufkin Police Department reported 20 accidents.

The Nacogdoches Police Department also responded to multiple accidents due to poor road conditions. No roadway deaths have been reported in Angelina or Nacogdoches county.

In Shelby County, northeast of Nacogdoches, a Shelbyville woman died at around 8:10 AM in a weather-related vehicle accident. According to a KTRE report from the DPS, her vehicle slid off the road and crashed into trees.

DPS Troopers Investigate A Single Vehicle Accident In East Texas 

The single-vehicle crash took place on FM 2694. The road goes through the northern part of the Sabine Forest and begins off FM 417 east of Shelbyville.

The preliminary investigation shows that a Jeep SUV was driving west at an unsafe speed, according to the DPS. The vehicle slid across the eastbound lane and went off the roadway before striking two trees.

A witness pulled the driver from the wreck, as the vehicle caught fire and began to burn. The driver was identified as Barbra Jackson, 54, of Shelbyville.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Unsafe Road Conditions Continue In Deep East Texas 

Roads are very slippery as a wintery mix continued to fall this afternoon in parts of East Texas. Local law enforcement is advising all residents to stay home if possible.
