Why Families Love Visiting Caldwell Zoo in Tyler

(Tyler, Texas) East Texas is extremely fortunate to have a world-class zoo that is filled with wildlife from around the world.

What Makes Caldwell Zoo Different

Caldwell Zoo in Tyler is unlike any other zoo that I have visited in the past. The animals that I have seen at many other zoos are often kept in small pens, usually pie-shaped, that don't offer the animals much room to live and roam as they would in the wild.

Thanks to the exhibits at Caldwell Zoo, many animals are free to roam vast areas of the zoo. Lots of different animal species live in the same space, just as they would in the wild.

Some exhibits feature monkeys and birds living together, while others include buffalo, deer, zebra, and other savanna animals sharing the same habitat. It's truly unique. Now, some predator animals are kept separate, obviously, but they do have space to be themselves and show off their skills when they're not busy napping in the middle of the day!

Exploring the Amazon River’s Edge Exhibit

It had been several years since I last visited Caldwell Zoo with my family. We recently made a trip to the zoo and were impressed with the new additions that have been made at the zoo since our last visit.

New to us was the Amazon River's Edge section of the zoo. This new exhibit opened in late 2024 and features a 10,000 square foot enclosure with capybara, a sloth, and numerous birds flying overhead and fish swimming in an enclosed river.

Fun for the kids in this area is the new interactive goat experience and primate exhibit, along with the many Macaws that are just hanging out and squawking at all the visitors.

The zoo's African Safari exhibit, where giraffes, elephants, and more live, underwent a renovation in 2017. If you haven't been to Caldwell Zoo in a while, like me, you will be pleasantly surprised and enjoy all of the new upgrades and exhibits. Many areas remain the same and house the animals that you love to view.

Interactive Animal Experiences for Visitors

In addition to viewing all of the animals, the Caldwell Zoo gives you an opportunity to interact with some of the animals. You can feed the fish, feed giraffes leaves of lettuce, walk in the bird walkabout, pet the goats, along with other special animal encounters.

You can see a black bear, penguins, meerkats, flamingos, lemurs, otters, lions, rhinos, bald eagles, and so much more at this world-class zoo in Tyler.

The History of Caldwell Zoo

Caldwell Zoo originated from the backyard collection of David King Caldwell and his wife, Lottie. Since opening in 1953, the zoo has grown to more than 85 acres and is now one of the nation’s accredited zoos. This unique zoo is located northwest of downtown Tyler and straddles a business district and neighborhood.

I can only imagine what it's like to live in the neighborhood around the zoo and hear the random roar of the lions and trumpet sounds from the elephants, along with the many different calls of the birds that reside at Caldwell Zoo.

Why Caldwell Zoo Is Worth Another Visit

Needless to say, Caldwell Zoo did not disappoint on our most recent visit. While outside, food and drink are not allowed, there are picnic tables in the parking lot and plenty of eating options within the zoo, from a cafe to several food trucks.
