Susanna Clark, wife of Guy Clark and longtime friend to Nashville singers and songwriters, died this week at age 73. As a songwriter, Clark is best know for the Emmylou Harris hit ‘Easy From Now On.’ She was also a talented painter, with the cover of Willlie Nelson‘s 1978 ‘Stardust’ album amongst her more famous works.

According to the Tennessean, Clark and her husband hosted regular songwriter gatherings in the mid-70s. They became friends with — and were an inspiration to — artists like Townes Van Zandt and Rodney Crowell. The above picture is from the 2005 movie ‘Be Here to Love Me,’ which chronicled the life of Van Zandt, who died in 1997.

In addition to the Harris hit (also recorded by artists like Miranda Lambert), Clark wrote ‘I’ll Be Your San Antone’ by Dottsy, and Kathy Mattea’s 1989 hit ‘Come From the Heart.’ Rosanne Cash, Jerry Jeff Walker and her husband Guy also recorded Susanna Clark’s songs.

Clark died in her sleep on Wednesday morning (June 27). She had been in poor health before her passing. There will be no funeral or memorial service, per her wishes.
